Breast Cancer Rates on Long Island

The Long Island Breast Cancer Rates map provides information about breast cancer incidence rates by zip code on Long Island. Incidence rate is a statistic that divides the number of newly diagnosed cases of disease, by the number of people in the population that the case comes from. The breast cancer data is shown as a statistic that compares the breast cancer data for each of the zip codes with the breast cancer data for the State of New York as a whole. This type of statistic is called a relative rate. The location of individual women with breast cancer is not shown to protect their privacy and confidentiality.

Hazardous Waste Sites on Long Island

The Hazardous Waste Sites on Long Island map provides information about industrial hazardous waste facilities that have or currently manufacture waste products. Industrial facilities are regulated and waste release information is reported to the federal government and monitored on a regular basis. This map also allows you to look at breast cancer incidence rates and the location of hazardous waste sites simultaneously. It includes both active and inactive waste sites as well as facilities involved in waste storage and handling. The active hazardous waste sites layer displays the location of New York state hazardous waste, sites that are still active or running on Long Island. The inactive hazardous waste sites layer displays New York state hazardous waste sites that are no longer in operation. The EPA hazardous waste sites layer displays the location of federal hazardous waste sites.

Pesticides on Long Island

The Pesticides on Long Island map provides pesticide detection data in Suffolk County drinking water wells. Data are aggregated to the level of place (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau). Pesticides are chemicals used to eliminate or control unwanted or harmful insects, plants, fungi, animals, or micro-organisms in order to protect food crops and other plants. This map allows you to look at pesticide detection information and breast cancer relative incidence rates simultaneously.
