Ethics Reform Initiative in Meeting with
Minerals Management Service Employees

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today launched an ethics reform initiative that will reexamine the potential criminal conduct of a group of Minerals Management Service employees, look at restructuring the agency’s oil and gas royalty program, and thoroughly review the Department’s ethics regulations and policies. Leading the initiative for the Secretary will be Tom Strickland, the Secretary’s chief of staff who was the United States Attorney for Colorado when Salazar served as the state’s Attorney General and top law enforcement officer.  moremore

    Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that he will be traveling to the Denver, Colorado office of the Minerals Management Service tomorrow to outline his first priorities for reform in the Department of the Interior. He is the first member of the Cabinet to participate in a White House Press Briefing in the Obama Administration.  moremore

    Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today toured the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island to assess safety and accessibility issues at the national park sites in New York Harbor. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ) accompanied the Secretary.

    “The Statue of Liberty is unique among our national parks as a symbol of freedom not only to Americans but also to people around the world,” Secretary Salazar said. “As a U.S. Senator and now as Secretary of the Interior, I believe the crown should be re-opened to the public if at all possible. I am here today to tour the statue and promise to work hard with the National Park Service to explore all feasible alternatives to reopening it.” moremore

    Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today told employees at a packed Headquarters assembly and at hundreds of work sites around the nation via satellite broadcast that he wants their help "to transform this Department from what is perceived as the Department of the West to the Department of All of America. Through our service together we can remake America and change our world,” the Secretary said, referring to President Obama’s statement that “this is a moment of opportunity for our nation; an opportunity to remake America; an opportunity to inspire a new ethic of public service.” moremore

    Secretary Salazar Takes Oath of Office at White House, Meets Interior Employees and Staff on First Day

    Welcomed by a large crowd of employees this morning when he entered the Department of the Interior headquarters a day after his Senate confirmation, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar promised to bring positive change to what he called the “Department of America.” Secretary Salazar then joined President Obama and Vice President Biden at a formal White House swearing-in ceremony and, later in the day, met with the acting leadership of the department. "Together, all of us in this department, in its agencies and in its bureaus are going to be part of changing the world for the better," Salazar told Interior employees. “Fundamentally, the branding of this department will change because this is the Department of America, not the Department of the West,” he said, noting that the change would be evident in what the department does in historic preservation, in parks and conservation, and in helping build the nation’s clean energy economy. moremore

    Ken Salazar, a fifth-generation Coloradan who served as the state’s U.S. Senator, Attorney General and Director of Natural Resources, was confirmed today by a unanimous vote in the U.S. Senate to become the 50th Secretary of the Interior. “I am honored to have been chosen for this position and look forward to working with President Obama on our nation’s energy and natural resource challenges,” Salazar said. “I will be a strong and forceful advocate for the wise stewardship of our nation’s land and water resources, I will help us build a clean energy economy for the twenty-first century, and I will work to restore the integrity of the nation-to-nation relationship with our Native American communities.” moremore
