Economic Recovery Act Moving Forward on Schedule

1/29/2009 - On Jan. 28, the full House approved its version of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Senate committees will begin consideration of its own version of the bill shortly. Included in the $819 billion House bill are a 4.9 percent increase to Federal Medical Assistance Percentages (FMAP), funding affecting senior housing, $87 billion in extra federal Medicaid funding, $20 billion to encourage the development and implementation of health information technology (HIT) in aging services, and additional funding for Community Service Block Grants and nutrition services. Reform Effort Continues for Nursing Home Five-Star Rating System

1/29/2009 - AAHSA, along with other national provider groups, met again with the Centers for CMS to press for reforms in the five-star rating system. CMS officials promised a response on next steps on these issues within the next two weeks, although they pointed out that the agency’s lack of a new administrator limits their ability to commit to changes at this point. We continue to follow up with CMS on the problems you have encountered with the new system. Read more.

New Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) Needed

1/29/2009 - Beginning Feb. 2, all employers, regardless of size, must use the revised I-9 form for all new hires and to verify any employee with expiring employment authorization. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) implemented this change in order to improve the security of the employment verification process. Read on.

U.S. Senate Confirms Donovan as HUD Secretary

1/29/2008 - The U.S. Senate confirmed Shaun Donovan as the new secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). We congratulate him in his new duties and look forward to working with him. Read more.
