Agricultural Health Study

The Agricultural Health Study (AHS) explores a wide range of health outcomes among licensed pesticide applicators, their spouses and children potentially exposed to pesticides and other agricultural hazards.

AHS African-American Farmers and Farm Workers (http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/atniehs/labs/epi/studies/chronic/index.cfm#ahs)

Approximately 1,100 African-American farmers and farm workers from eastern North Carolina were followed for mortality and cancer incidence along with the AHS Study.

Agricultural Health Study

AHS Neurobehavioral Study

In collaboration with Frederic Gerr, M.D., University of Iowa, 800 cohort participants will receive neurobehavioral tests and provide biological samples to evaluate whether long-term, low-level exposures to pesticides have neurological consequences.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Study

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Study

The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Study explores potential associations of ALS with exposure to lead and other neurotoxins, lifestyle factors and genetic polymorphisms affecting neurologic function or lead metabolism.

DDE & PCBs in the Collaborative Perinatal Project

The DDE & PCBs in the Collaborative Perinatal Project explores the health effects of in utero exposure to organochlorines such as DDE and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) using biologic specimens from the Collaborative Perinatal Project (CPP).

The Growth and Puberty Study (GAP) study is exploring the use of more sensitive hormonal measures of puberty onset and exploring factors associated with timing of puberty in children of licensed applicators from Iowa enrolled in the Agricultural Health Study.

LIFE & VALID Lung Studies

LIFE & VALID Lung Studies

The LIFE study's objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of Lung Imaging Fluorescence Endoscopy (LIFE) in detecting and following early lung lesions in patients at high risk for developing lung cancer. The VALID study, a companion to the LIFE study, evaluates the effect of initial arterial ligation versus venous ligation during surgery on the risk of distant metastases in lung cancer patients.

The Menstrual & Reproductive Health Study examines the association between menstrual and reproductive factors and morbidity and mortality resulting from chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. The cohort consisted of 997 white college-educated women who prospectively recorded menstrual cycle data for as many as 50 years, beginning in 1934.  Information on lifestyle factors and medical history was obtained through a mail survey conducted in the early 1990s.

North Carolina Menopause Study (NCMNO)

The North Carolina Menopause Study is a prospective study designed to assess timing of menopause among mothers who originally participated in the North Carolina Infant Feeding Study. The study examines the age of menopause in relation to organochlorine exposures, with exposure measurements taken during the reproductive years.

Norwegian Mother & Child Cohort Study

Norwegian Mother & Child Cohort Study

The Norwegian Mother & Child study (MoBa) is an ongoing long-term prospective cohort study of 110,000 pregnant women and their babies. In collaboration with the Norwegian National Public Health Institute (NIPH), NIEHS is supporting the collection of additional biologic specimens from the pregnant women.

OBOZ Study

The OBOZ Study will investigate whether obesity affects respiratory response to ozone. It is a collaborative effort between London’s group and investigators from the Center for Environmental Medicine and Lung Biology (CEMALB) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Postpartum Uterine Regression Study

Postpartum Uterine Regression Study

The Postpartum Uterine Regression Study documents any fibroids present in early to mid-pregnancy and measures fibroid size after postpartum uterine regression. Investigators hypothesize that small fibroids will have disappeared, and large fibroids will remain essentially unchanged in size.

A case-control study involving 1475 incident lung cancer cases aged 40-79 from Connecticut, Utah and southern Idaho. Population controls were carried out on 1811 cases to evaluate the risk associated with residential exposure to radon.  Complete residential histories and information on known and potential lung cancer risk factors were obtained by in-person and telephone interviews. Radon was measured on multiple levels of past and current homes using 12-month alpha-track etch detectors.

The Sister Study

The Sister Study

The Sister Study will prospectively examine environmental and familial risk factors for breast cancer and other diseases in a cohort of 50,000 sisters of women who have had breast cancer. The study should enhance the group’s ability to understand the interplay of genes and environment in breast cancer risk and to identify potentially preventable risk factors.

The Treatment of Lead-Exposed Children (TLC) clinical trial compared the effect of lead chelation with succimer to placebo therapy on a variety of cognitive, behavioral, and neuromotor endpoints in children of school age with baseline blood lead levels of 20-44 µg/dl.
