Colorado teen's sign-translating glove is one of top inventions for 2002, says Time

Time magazine has listed Ryan Patterson's "Sign Language Translator," a glove that converts hand positions employed by people who are deaf and who use fingerspelling of words in English-as part of American Sign Language or other manual system-into letters that can be read on a computer screen, as one of the top inventions for 2002. Patterson designed and built the glove while he was a high school senior in Grand Junction, Colo. Patterson's invention won top honors in the 2001 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the 2001 Siemens Westinghouse Science & Technology Competition, and Intel's 2002 Science Talent Search, a competition often referred to as "the junior Nobel prize."
