NIH Loan Repayment Program

September 4, 2003

This letter is intended to inform health professionals with outstanding educational debt who conduct clinical research or pediatric research within the scientific mission areas of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech and language, of two NIH-wide programs for which they may be eligible. Please disregard this communication if it was misdirected to you.

The NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) for Clinical Researchers and for Pediatric Researchers have recently been reissued. These programs are intended to attract health professionals to careers in these research domains. Applicants must be doctoral-level health professionals with U.S. citizenship or permanent residency status who will devote at least twenty hours per week over a two-year period to conduct clinical research or pediatric research funded by nonprofit or government (Federal, state or local) sources. These programs will provide up to $35,000 per year in educational loan repayment during the period of this two-year research commitment.

Over 60% of applications reviewed by the NIH in Fiscal Year (FY) 2003 have been funded. The NIDCD, among other NIH Institutes, had sufficient funds allocated for these programs in FY 2003 to award more meritorious applications that it received.

Applications are submitted electronically via the LRP website, and must be received by December 31, 2003. Much information about these programs is posted on this website.

NIDCD is very supportive of these programs and would like to see increasing numbers of applications within its scientific mission areas submitted. If you have any questions about these programs please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
