Rajendra S. Chhabra, Ph.D., D.A.B.T., heads the General Toxicology Group within the Toxicology Branch. His group conducts research in the arena of regulatory toxicology identifies specific data gaps in the literature concerning the toxicology of chemicals or physical agents nominated for NTP evaluation. With extensive interdisciplinary/interagency collaborations, the group designs, conducts or directs studies intended to address targeted research needs by applying state-of-the-art methodology. After review of the results from these studies, follow-up research projects are undertaken to investigate mechanistic aspects of adverse effects for the select chemicals. The group publishes its findings by preparing technical reports that are peer-reviewed by the external expert panels. The toxicology research data generated is often used by the regulatory agencies to assess potential risk to the population exposed to chemicals present in the environment or workplace. The group consists of highly accomplished scientists who are often sought for their expert opinion by the national and international organizations dealing with the potential adverse effects of toxicants humans are exposed to.

Chhabra earned his Ph.D. in pharmacology in 1970 from the University of London, England, and BVSc — a D.V.M. equivalent — from India’s Vikram University in 1962. He has been an American Board of Toxicology (D.A.B.T.) diplomate since 1981. He has over 30 years of progressive experience as a lead toxicologist for a number of program-related projects or functions within the NTP. He has been invited participant to national and international meetings and has authored numerous manuscripts, reviews, technical reports and served on the editorial board of Environmental Health Perspective for several years. He is a member of SOT, NCSOT and ASPET.
