Using an automated tail-cuff device, we monitored daily the systolic blood pressure of conscious CCl4-treated rats and their controls. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was monitored in conscious cirrhotic (o) and control rats (o), SR141716A (3 mg/kg) was injected i.v. at 0 min. Data represented as means s.e.; n = 6, control; 7, cirrhotic. *, P < 0.05 compared with corresponding baseline value. Within 10–12 weeks, CCl4-treated rats became hypotensive relative to their controls, with a systolic blood pressure of 107 3 mmHg versus 130 7 mmHg in controls (P < 0.005).
