Stevens Introduces Bill to Protect Consumer Phone Records
Measure Will Protect Consumer Phone Records from Unauthorized Disclosures

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) introduced legislation last week to protect consumer’s private phone records, including who they call and who calls them. The Protecting Consumer Phone Records Act will protect the personal phone records of consumers from unauthorized disclosure.  The bill prevents phone companies from selling personal information to others, and requires new safeguards to prevent a person from posing as a customer in order to get copies of their telephone bills.  Stalkers, ex-spouses or even disgruntled employees who want to spy on someone by stealing their private phone records will be out of luck on this measure.  And unscrupulous companies who make a business in trafficking in personal information will be out of business.  Most importantly, the bill extends consumer protections to all technologies evenly so that traditional, wireless and Internet phone callers are all protected.  Additionally, the bill strengthens the enforcement authority at all levels so that the Federal government, state government, phone companies and consumers can all pursue lawbreakers.

“Consumers should be able to make wireless and Internet phone calls without giving away their personal information,” said Sen. Stevens.  “This bill is good for consumers and good for new technologies.”
