Summary of Tobacco Dependence Workgroup

December 06-07, 2001, Dallas, TX

Present:

Geof Williams, University of Rochester (Chair)
Trish Jordan, BCC Coordinator
Chantal Levesque, University of Rochester
Holly Anne McGregor, University of Rochester

1. The group discussed options for a supplemental grant using data from sites using the “luxury model” and sites using the “economy model.

    1. Luxury Model Sites:  There are 5 sites using the luxury model.  The workgroup discussed the data that may be useful and available for cross-site analyses.  The workgroup decided that information regarding specific measures, interventions, and mediators need to be compiled for these 5 sites so that a specific theoretical and data analytic proposal may be made.

                                                               i.      Action items associated with (a):

1.      Trish will send Holly baseline measures, mediators, and intervention types.

2.      Holly will determine the common measures used across studies and longitudinal time points of the measures.

3.      A file explicating the common measures will be made available to workgroup members so that a basis for a supplemental grant may be determined.  This will be available by early to mid January.

4.      Demographic information will be coded in this file using the scheme developed by the Nutrition workgroup.  Trish and Chantel will interface with the Nutrition workgroup to get this information.

5.      A conference call will be scheduled in January to discuss the common measures and supplementary grant proposals.

6.      Data from measures determined to be of interest for the supplemental grant will be requested from the PI’s of each of the 5 sites in a specific SPSS compatible format.

7.      Possible measures of interest discussed were baseline smoking related measures including demographics, intervention type and length, contact time, mediators and mediator timing, and follow up timing.

    1. “Economy Model” sites:  There are some 10 sites using the economy model.  The workgroup discussed information from these sites that could be used for supplemental grant, and determined that baseline information and demographic information including age, ethnicity, SES and education level would be needed.  Data will be requested from the PI’s at each of these sites in a specific SPSS format similar to that in (a) above.
