Texas Social Work Law, Rules and NASW Code of Ethics and Public and Professional Policy Changes

Social Work practice is framed by law and bound by ethics. This workshop will bring social workers up to date on important changes in the social work rules changes and the NASW Code of Ethics and NASW public and professional policies that occurred in August of 2008.  Become part of the debate in Texas on the issues around definitions of social work clinical practice and diagnosis.

Potential changes to other laws and rules stemming from the legislative session in 2009 that affect social work practice will be presented and participants will work with the Texas Law for the Social Worker book and scenarios to put their ethics into action.

This workshop, presented by NASW/Texas Executive Director Vicki Hansen, LMSW-AP, ACSW, will provide information that is critical to ethical practice and risk management for social workers in Texas regardless of practice setting.

Women's Legislative Days:  Cancelled

Dear Friends of Women's Legislative Days:

It is with deep sadness that I share with you the decision of the Women's Legislative Days 2009 Steering Committee to cancel the event.  Another casualty of the current economic downturn, we were unable to secure sufficient underwriting and other support for the conference. I have great hope for an exciting rebirth of Women’s Legislative Days in 2011.

PLEASE NOTE: The Texas Women’s Political Caucus Roast is NOT cancelled and will be held as scheduled from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Wyndham.  Please contact the Texas Women’s Political Caucus at txwpc@yahoo.com for more information - and be sure to come out to show your support of women in the legislative process!

Thank you so much to everyone who put in countless hours over the last two years...  You are inspiring as always!

Student Loan Forgiveness

The U.S. Department of Education has created a new call center for borrowers to obtain information about the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 (H.R. 2669). The number for the Federal Student Aid Information Center is (800) 433-3243. The law forgives outstanding education debt for those persons that meet the eligibility requirements. Those that would benefit are employees that have made 120 monthly payments on their loans while serving full-time in social work in public child or family service agencies, government, nonprofit, military, education, and others areas. The loan forgiveness provisions became effective on October 1, 2007. It is important to note that payments made after October 1, 2007 on an existing loan can count towards the 120 payments if the loan meets certain criteria. For more information on the new law visit https://ssl.capwiz.com/socialworkers/issues/alert/?alertid=10355231
