Report on Carcinogens
Dyes metabolized to 3,3'-Dimethylbenzidine (DMB)
- Primary Uses or Exposures: Dyes metabolized to 3,3'-dimethylbenzidine are used in printing textiles, as biological stains, and in color photography.
- Nominated by: NIEHS
- Basis for Nomination: The azo linkages of DMB-based dyes are chemically equivalent and are readily cleaved by chemical or enzymatic reduction to form free DMB which is listed as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.
- Current Status: Listed in the RoC as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen since the 10th RoC (2002)
