Phased Innovation Awards and Phased Application Awards (R21/R33 and R33 grants)

The NCI uses newly-created Phased Innovation Award and Phased Application Award mechanisms to support technology development and clinical research. These awards provide support for an initial exploratory/developmental (R21) phase to achieve proof-of-principle or to establish feasibility and a subsequent (R33) phase for application or futher development. Specific features of this mechanism include:

  • Single submission and evaluation of both the R21 and R33 phase as one application
  • Expedited transition from the feasibility phase to the application phase based upon negotiated, peer-reviewed milestones
  • Flexible staging of feasibility (R21) and application (R33) phases

Applications for these types of grants are accepted by the NCI only in response to specific Program Announcements or Request for Applications such as those listed below.
