Extraordinary Opportunities for Early Cancer Detection and Risk Assessment Research

Early Detection Research Worldwide

Genetic research on cancer has grown tremendously in the last decade, and the increase in the number of published research articles has been truly phenomenal. However, molecular and genetic research focusing on the early detection of cancer is still lagging. MEDLINE searches for research articles with genetic, molecular biology, neoplasm and early detection as keywords revealed that over an eight-year period (1992-2000), the number of published papers with early cancer detection by molecular means is less than 530, even though thousands of articles on molecular and genetic aspects of human cancers have been published. The reason for this is not obvious, although it seems to indicate that translational research, especially on early detection, has not progressed well.
