Extraordinary Opportunities for Early Cancer Detection and Risk Assessment Research
Population-Based Research
A requirement for developing screening tools is to measure the frequency and prevalence of alterations in genes and proteins. This helps determine the required sensitivity and specificity of some potential early detection marker for its use in screening. The initiative facilitates molecular analyses at the population level, possibly through linkage to established cancer registries, such as SEER (Surveillance, Evaluation and End Results) and the Colon Cancer Registry. Population-based research also facilitates the use of registries consisting of unique populations and ethnically-mixed populations, such as familial registries for colon and breast cancer, for studying molecular alterations for determining penetrance of a specific genetic mutation.
