New evidence from the Framingham Heart Study shows that people whose parents lived longer were more likely to avoid developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease in middle age than their peers whose parents died at a younger age. The number of American women dying from heart disease is decreasing. Americans in their early to mid-50s currently report poorer health, more pain and more trouble doing every day physical tasks than their older peers reported when they were the same age in recent years. The brains of alcohol-dependent individuals are affected not only by their own heavy drinking, but also by genetic or environmental factors associated with their parents' drinking.
