Franks Repudiates Tax Hikes in Budget Resolution

FY 2008 Budget Resolution to Result in the Largest Tax Increase in American History

March 29, 2007Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) voiced his opposition today to the blatant tax increases veiled within the Democrats’ FY 2008 Budget Resolution.  The Resolution passed today in the House by a margin of only 6 votes, with 12 Democrats voting with Republicans to oppose the legislation.

Congressman Franks stated, “The FY 2008 Budget proposed by the Democrats reveals two unnerving realities.  First, that we are now faced with the largest tax increase in the history of humanity; and second— in an astonishing and arrogant disregard for the truth— that they blatantly refuse to admit the fact that underneath the deceptive guises of an alleged balanced budget and PAYGO, this budget results in an unprecedented leap into a debt-laden future.  The average citizen in my district will face an average tax increase of almost $3,000, and meanwhile, the desperate need for entitlement reform is blatantly ignored.  For the sake of our children and future generations, we must work vigorously to oppose this mindless plunge into fiscal insanity.”

Congressman Franks mentioned that he strongly supported the Republican version of the Budget which had been offered as a substitute, containing provisions that would balance the budget within five years, end the raid on Social Security, and provide support for our veterans— all without raising taxes.

An unwavering advocate for long-term fiscal responsibility, smaller government, and lower taxes, Franks recently received two awards demonstrating his steadfast commitment to relieving the financial strain imposed on hard-working American citizens.  Most recently, Congressman Franks was presented with the “Taxpayers’ Friend” award by the National Taxpayers Union for the fourth consecutive year, “for consistently voting to promote economic freedom and reduce the burden of the American Taxpayer.”  He also received the “Defender of Economic Freedom Award” from the Club for Growth, ranking among the top five most taxpayer-friendly Members of Congress.

Congressman Franks is serving his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Readiness Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary, and is Ranking Member on the Constitution Subcommittee.
