Congressman Trent FranksEarns Perfect Scoring on Club for Growth’s “2007 RE-PORK Card"

August 23, 2007 - Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) was named one of only sixteen Members of Congress, all Republicans, to earn a perfect 100% scoring for the Club for Growth’s 2007 RePORK Card, based on all Members' votes on 50 anti-pork amendments on the 2008 appropriations bills.

"The recent earmark votes reflect the fact that many Members of Congress seem to believe they can repeal the laws of mathematics. Nevertheless, the American people realize mindless government spending has set us on an untenable course toward fiscal and economic disaster, with Members financing the political points gained by strategic earmark spending on the futures of our own children.

“My votes on the recent amendments on the appropriations bills reflect a deeply held commitment on my part to protecting the American taxpayer, curbing reckless government spending, and supporting policies rooted in true fiscal discipline."

The 50 amendments scored by Club for Growth would have struck earmarks for millions in wasteful spending for projects, including "$1 million for the “Center for Instrumented Critical Infrastructure in Johnstown," a center for which no Member, including the earmark’s sponsor Rep. John Murtha, could confirm the existence, and $2 million to establish the "Rangel Center for Public Service" at City College of New York, requested by none other than Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY).

Only one of the 50 earmark-striking amendments passed. The average Republican score was 43%, while the average Democratic score was 2%.

Congressman Franks is serving his third term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Readiness Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary, and is Ranking Member on the Constitution Subcommittee.
