Abstract

In many of the world’s developing nations, especially in Asia and Latin America, a car boom is on. China exemplifies this trend, and its indigenous automobile manufacturing industry will soon overtake Germany in the ranks of the world’s auto producers. The impacts of increased motorization are not only economic. Heavier traffic creates more hazardous conditions for drivers and pedestrians, as well as increased air pollution and the resultant health problems. But many automakers seem to be assuming greater social responsible for their products and are looking to make them more sustainable. Several cities around the world are taking proactive steps to address congestion and pollution to protect their citizens.
