Abstract: This article explores the causes of gallstones (cholelithiasis) and offers strategies for preventing their recurrence. Topics include the symptoms of a typical gallstone attack, dietary risk factors, how gallstones form, the epidemiology of gallstones, the role of genetics, strategies for preventing gallstones through diet, the importance of weight loss, diagnostic tests used to confirm gallstones, and treatment strategies, including surgical removal, and laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy). The author stresses that healthy, slow weight loss along with a balanced diet and moderate exercise is the key. The article concludes with two web site addresses through which readers can obtain more information.
