Who is Eligible?
Employees in occupations approved for Saturday differential pay. (See the Title 38 Occupational Coverage Chart.) Saturday differential pay is extended to an occupation only after a needs determination has been made.

Eligible Title 38 employees are paid an additional 25 percent of the employee's hourly premium rate of basic pay for an entire scheduled tour that includes service between midnight on Friday and midnight on Saturday.
Eligible Title 38 employees are also paid Saturday differential for overtime work on a Saturday, for work on a holiday that falls on a Saturday, and when substituting for another employee on a Saturday.
Approval Process for Use of Saturday Differential Authority
Before employees can receive Saturday differential pay, the occupation must be approved for coverage under this authority. Application of Saturday differential is approved by the Director of the CC who considers the following factors: (1) mission-specific requirements which dictate the need for Saturday differential pay, (2) use of a Saturday differential for similar positions in other local hospitals, and (3) recruitment or retention problems for the occupation. To initiate new occupational coverage, refer to the PHS Premium Pay Instruction 38-550-1-40.B.1, 2, and 3.
