Microfilm Sales Program Fact Sheet


As part of its preservation program, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) microfilms brittle serials and monographs in core medical subjects and selected non-brittle materials in the historical collection. Individuals and institutions may purchase microfilm copies of titles NLM has filmed.

Availability Of Microfilm

To determine if microfilm is available, requesting parties must search NLM's online catalog, LocatorPlus http://www.locatorplus.gov. When a title has been retrieved from the catalog, select “MARC View.” In the following example, the information needed to place an order is in bold.

Submitting Orders

The following Information is Required:

NLM inspects the microfilm and sends the film directly to the duplication vendor (OCLC Preservation Services Center) unless there are text legibility or image quality problems, or if any pages are missing from the filmed version of the text. In such cases the Library will contact the requesting party and determine if the party still wants to buy a copy of the film.

The cost for each microfilm reel is:

There will be an additional charge for special shipping arrangements, including rush delivery service.

Copies are made using 35mm positive silver microfilm. The minimum order is one full reel. (Reels are duplicated without alteration, so a reel may contain images of more monograph titles or journal issues than were requested.)

Payment and Shipping

Upon receipt of order information and master microfilm reels from NLM, OCLC Preservation Services Center contacts requestors directly to get payment information. Note that orders for more than ten reels may take longer to process.
