About The Neuro-Oncology Branch
The Neuro-Oncology Branch is a trans-institute program of
the National Cancer Institute and National Institute of Neurologic
Dieseases and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health.
The aim of this branch is to develop an integrated clinical,
translational and basic research program for the purpose of
developing novel experimental therapeutics for children and
adults with tumors of the central nervous system.
Investigators in the branch conduct both laboratory and clinical
research to:
provide an integrated, multi-disciplinary inter-Institute platform for clinicians
and basic scientists developing improved therapies for the treatment of adults
and children with brain tumors
plan and conduct clinical trials utilizing strategies based
on outstanding preclinical investigation
provide consultation in neuro-oncology for the National Cancer
Institute and the National Institutes of Health
coordinate collaborative efforts in basic and applied research
in areas related to neuro-oncology through the establishment
of working groups of investigators in such areas as neuro-development
and oncogenesis, neural damage and repair, neuro-immunology,
neurogenesis, neuro-immunology, neuro-genetics, angiogenesis
and invasion, and central nervous system drug delivery
foster the training and development of clinical fellows and
other trainees in adult and pediatric oncology, neurology,
radiation oncology and neurosurgery
follow and work with physicians from around the country in
the delivery of expert medical care to patients with brain
tumors, through clinical investigations and by working with
local physicians in the delivery of standard care.
The Neuro-Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute and National Institute
of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is located in suburban Washington, D.C.
at the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Maryland. Patient evaluation
and care takes place at the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center, which includes
a full service 350 bed hospital and outpatient clinics devoted to clinical research,
located on the National Institutes of Health campus. It offers an opportunity
to deliver expert, state-of-the-art, novel investigative therapies without regard
for the ability of patients to pay for transportation to, or treatment on clinical
