The goals of the study are to increase the number of calls to the Cancer Information Service (CIS) by women attending health clinics in low-income areas of Chicago. Women who are scheduled for a colposcopy following the abnormal pap result will be randomized to receive either a standard appointment reminder letter, or an intervention letter that specifically requests that the patient (or their designate) call the CIS. Suggested questions to ask the CIS are provided. The study will assess whether an increase in calls to the CIS can actually lead to improvements in attendance at follow-up appointments. The outcomes will include completion of colposcopy and satisfaction with the provider. If successful, this study has the potential to be used in other situations where individuals may benefit from having cancer-related information prior to a clinic appointment.
