Abstract: This fact sheet helps readers understand type 1 diabetes, in which the pancreas makes no insulin. The result is that glucose cannot get into the cells, so it builds up in the blood, resulting in high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia). The fact sheet describes the blood glucose levels considered to be diagnostic, the complications of diabetes, and treatment options, including insulin use, diet therapy, physical exercise and activity, drug therapy, and blood glucose monitoring (SMBG). The fact sheet is written in nontechnical language, is illustrated with simple line drawings, and is available in English or Spanish. Space is provided for the reader to record his or her healthy blood glucose goals. 4 figures.
