Abstract: This chapter on insulin therapy in children is from a reference book that explores the pharmacokinetics of insulin and insulin programs. The book focuses on the latest blood glucose self-monitoring equipment and assessment strategies that can achieve optimal glycemic control and thus reduce the occurrence of complications including retinopathy (eye disease), neuropathy (nerve disease), nephropathy (kidney disease) and cardiovascular disease. In this chapter, the authors note that the combination of severe insulin deficiency and the physical and psychoemotional changes that accompany normal growth and development make day-to-day management of pediatric patients especially difficult. The authors discuss the goals of treatment, insulin regimens, new insulin preparations, adjusting insulin doses, matching insulin to food intake, exercise, outpatient care, hypoglycemia, and sick day rules. One case study is included. 18 references.
