| Abstract: | This brief fact sheet provides an overview of diabetes and new insulins. Insulin is a hormone that takes the glucose from the bloodstream and carries it inside the body’s cells, where it is used for energy. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin. Written in nontechnical language, the fact sheet answers common questions about the three major types of diabetes, how diabetes is treated, the different types of insulin, and new insulin analogs, including glargine, detemir, lispro, aspart, glulisine, and inhaled insulin.
