The National Cancer Institute (NCI)-All Ireland Cancer Consortium announces its Joint Research Project in Cancer 2007 Call for Applications. This joint research project, established by NCI and the Health Research Board of Ireland, aims to develop strong and sustainable relationships between cancer researchers and research institutions in Ireland and the United States by supporting a shared post-doctoral researcher working on a defined cancer research project of mutual interest. The project is awarded on a full-time basis over three years and is open to cancer researchers working on the island of Ireland or in the NCI intramural or extramural program. The closing date for applications is 5 p.m. August 17, 2007.

RFA Announced for U.S.-India Bilateral Collaborative Research Partnerships on the Prevention of HIV/AIDS

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has issued a Request for Applications (RFA) for U.S.-India Bilateral Collaborative Research Partnerships (CRP) on the Prevention of HIV/AIDS. Applications are invited from U.S.-funded institutions with an Indian-institution partner to establish Collaborative Research Partnerships (CRP) in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention with an emphasis on topical microbicides as well as other modes of HIV/AIDS prevention. The RFA uses the Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism. Letters of Intent are due by September 18, and the application deadline is October 18, 2007.

The U.S.-India Bilateral CRP Program is designed to develop collaborations between scientists and institutions in the United States and India to conduct high-quality HIV/AIDS prevention research of mutual interest and benefit to both countries while developing the basis for future institutional and individual scientific collaborations. This funding opportunity will use the research capacity of the institutions and scientists in both countries to advance the field of HIV/AIDS prevention and develop preliminary data that may support a research proposal to test an HIV/AIDS prevention program with public health significance.

An anticipated $3 million will be available in FY 2008 to fund 8 to 10 new awards. The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and/or other Indian Government research funding organization plans to issue a similar call for applications to support the Indian collaborators.

The RFA is cosponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Direct NCI-related scientific and programmatic inquiries to Kishor Bhatia, Ph.D., MRCPath., NCI Office of AIDS Malignancy Program, telephone: 301-496-4995, or e-mail: bhatiak@mail.nih.gov. Please refer to the RFA for a complete list of contacts.

The RFA, RFA-AI-07-031, appears in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts
