NIDA Director Dr. Alan I. Leshner presents a certificate of appreciation to Dr. Reese Jones for his service on the NIDA National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse. Dr. June Osborn and Ms. Linda Slattery, also outgoing Council members, received certificates as well.

At the February meeting of NIDA's National Advisory Council on Drug Abuse, four new Council members began their terms and three Council members finished theirs.

The new Council members are:

• Dr. Joe Bennett, a radiologist. Dr. Bennett was on the staff of the North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison for 28 years, where he founded and served as president of the Claude Parrish Radiation Therapy Institute.

• Dr. Kathleen Brady, professor of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Her areas of interest include the pharmacotherapy of substance abuse disorders and the comorbidity of substance abuse disorders with anxiety, affective, and psychotic disorders.

• Captain Linda Jo Fuller, director of the Tri-Service Addiction Recovery Center at the Malcolm Grow Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Captain Fuller has a master's degree in public health and has held several leadership positions in the U.S. Navy.

• Dr. Perry Renshaw, associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard University Medical School and associate director of the Brain Imaging Center at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts. His research focuses on brain imaging in neuropsychiatric disorders including drug abuse.

The retiring members are:

• Dr. Reese Jones, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. Dr. Jones is a psychiatrist and research clinical psychopharmacologist in drug abuse medicine.

• Dr. June Osborn, president of the Josiah Macy Foundation in New York City. Dr. Osborn trained as a virologist and pediatric infectious disease specialist. Previously a professor of epidemiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Dr. Osborn is now involved in research in HIV/AIDS prevention and epidemiology and AIDS and public policy.

• Ms. Linda Slattery, a graduate of Kansas State University in Manhattan with degrees in education and counseling. Ms. Slattery is a former high school teacher and counselor with extensive volunteer experience. She has worked on disaster relief and projects to help the homeless.

The Advisory Council provides direction and oversight for the Institute's scientific programs and policies. The group meets three times a year and provides the second level of review of NIDA grant applications. Members include experts in health and scientific disciplines related to drug abuse, public policy, and health policy.
