About the Monitoring the Future Study

NIDA's Monitoring the Future study is a national survey that tracks drug use trends among America's adolescents. The University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research has conducted the survey each year since 1975 among 12th graders; 8th and 10th graders were surveyed for the first time in 1991. Each spring, students from all three grades in a representative sample of public and private schools are asked if they have used any of a wide range of drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, in their lifetimes, in the past year, in the past month, and on a daily basis. In 1995, the survey administered questionnaires to about 16,000 high school seniors, 17,000 10th graders, and 18,000 8th graders in public and private schools nationwide.

To obtain additional information about the survey, contact Arthur Hughes of NIDA's Division of Epidemiology and Prevention Research at (301) 443-6637. Internet: ah62b@nih.gov.
