  Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop an accurate way of measuring people's thoughts about cancer risk. The researchers at the Queens Hospital Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Adelphi University are working together to design a new measure. Findings from this study will help us find new ways to help people avoid cancer.

Further study details as provided by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center:

Primary Outcome Measures:
  • Develop a comprehensive "blueprint," or description of the cancer-related risk perception construct; to use it to generate a cancer-related risk perception item pool; conduct an analysis of the generated items [ Time Frame: 3 years ] [ Designated as safety issue: No ]

Biospecimen Retention:   None Retained

Biospecimen Description:

Estimated Enrollment: 800
Study Start Date: September 2001
Estimated Study Completion Date: December 2010
Estimated Primary Completion Date: December 2010 (Final data collection date for primary outcome measure)
Groups/Cohorts Assigned Interventions
1
We will recruit fifteen New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD) clinic patients who report current tobacco use.
Behavioral: Interviews
45-minute individual interviews after the conclusion of their dental appointment
2
Second, we will recruit thirty dental clinic smokers (10 per day for 3 days) from the NYUCD waiting room.
Behavioral: focus group
A focus group of the preliminary cancer-related risk perception item pool.
3
Third, we will survey 200 student participants from Adelphi University.
Behavioral: Survery
Quantitative item analysis of the final item pool.
4
Queens Hospital Center with 200 patients.
Behavioral: Survey
A second confirmatory factor analysis.

Detailed Description:

The goal of the study is to develop and provide initial evidence for the reliability and validity of a measure of cancer-related risk perception. Given that tobacco use is the paramount cancer risk factor, we will use smokers' conceptions of their cancer risk as a basis for the initial development of the measure. First, we will generate a cancer-related risk perception item pool based on a review of the literature, and interviews with ethnically diverse smokers. Second, we will conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses of the items through focus groups and survey responses (N=200). Third, we will recruit an additional sample of 300 Adelphi University participants to confirm the factor structure of the cancer risk belief scale. The development of a cancer-related risk perception scale would allow for more accurate assessment of the impact of cancer risk information, and more precise testing of risk perception as a mediator of behavior change. It would also provide a basis for standardized comparison of risk perceptions across a variety of cancer sites with diverse populations. In addition, we will extend our work to a multi-ethnic primary care population at the Queens Hospital Center (QHC).
