NIH Hosts Town Meeting December 14 on Data Sharing Policy for Genome-Wide
Association Studies – Register to Attend or View by Webcast
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will hold a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday,
December 14, to discuss the proposed policy for sharing data obtained in genome-wide
association studies (GWAS) supported or conducted by the Institutes. Registration
to attend this event in Bethesda, MD, is open until Wednesday, December 13,
or you may view the meeting via Webcast. In addition, you are welcome
to submit questions in advance on the registration
Web page.
The meeting is being held from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bethesda North
Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Access
the Webcast through the GWAS Web site.
Details about the proposed policy also are available on the GWAS Web site.
Comments on the proposed policy, which were due November 30, will contribute
to the Town Hall Meeting discussions. The feedback received from the comment
period and Town Hall Meeting will help inform development of the policy.
A GWAS is any study of genetic variation across the entire human genome that
is designed to identify genetic associations with observable traits (such as
blood pressure or weight), or the presence or absence of a disease or condition.

Program Directors Sought for NCI Epidemiology & Genetics Research Program
Later this month at the Congress
of Epidemiology 2006 in Seattle, Wash., the National Cancer Institute's
(NCI) Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program (EGRP) will be in search
of two Program Directors to join its staff. These are wonderful positions
for the right epidemiologists. Your help in spreading the word about them
would be greatly appreciated.
We have immediate openings for two mid (2+ years) - to senior-level epidemiologists,
and later this summer, we will be recruiting for fellows. The mid- to senior-level
Program Director positions offer:
- opportunities to develop initiatives on the cutting-edge of cancer epidemiology,
- responsibility for a rich portfolio of grant-supported research in distinct
areas of cancer epidemiology,
- protected time to conduct research,
- opportunities for transdisciplinary collaboration, and a
- scientifically energizing and collegial environment.
Formal training in epidemiology, a doctoral degree, and U.S. citizenship are
required. The positions will be advertised at the GS13/14 level; the pay range
is $77,353 - $118,828. For further information, please see the Program

Debbie Winn, Ph.D., of EGRP, is leading the recruitment effort and will be
at the Congress with several other staff members. Debbie has worked as an epidemiologist
in NCI's in-house (intramural) epidemiology research program, as well as for
six years now in EGRP, the grant-supported (extramural) epidemiology research
arm of the Institute. She has found both experiences deeply rewarding. EGRP
is the largest funder of etiologic cancer epidemiology grants with a portfolio
of 500 grants.
EGRP is participating in the Congress' recruitment service and will staff
a table on Thursday, June 22. To schedule an appointment in advance of the

Program Announcement for Studies of Energy Balance and Cancer in Humans Reissued
Under New Numbers
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has reissued the Program Announcement
(PA) for Studies of Energy Balance and Cancer in Humans and assigned new, separate
Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) numbers for Research Project Grant (R01)
and Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant (R21) applications. The
change is effective immediately. The new numbers are:
- PA-06-404 for
R01s and competitive supplements to existing NIH grants (expires May 2, 2008,
unless reissued)
- PA-06-405 for
R21s (expires May 2, 2009, unless reissued)

- Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant (R21),
- NIH Exploratory/Development Grants – Phase II (R33), and
- Clinical Trial Planning Grants Program (R34).

to the receipt dates specified in the announcements.
