Librarians and the EHR: Envisioning the Future

Forum Overview
The goal of the forum is to ensure that health
sciences librarians are an integral and important part of
the electronic health records (EHR) team in healthcare
organizations.
Two outcomes for the forum are that health sciences
librarians are knowledgeable about electronic health
records and are prepared to promote themselves to assume
one of the many and varied roles librarians can perform
in this area of medical informatics.
Participants learn about electronic health records from the point of view of several medical informatics experts, including health sciences librarians currently working in this area. The format for the forum includes a keynote speaker, a panel discussion and a question and answer period. Following the formal presentations small groups of attendees, with panellists joining in, use a case-based scenario to envision how they can be ready to start inserting themselves into the EHR process at their institution.
The forum will
- Demonstrate increased awareness and knowledge about the direction of medical informatics relating to clinical and consumer decision-making and healthcare systems;
- Describe some of the issues and challenges associated with electronic health records;
- List three current or potential roles for librarians and library services to play in the implementation of electronic health records;
- Identify an idea or possible practical solution related to electronic health records to put into action when they return to their home institutions
- Understand characteristics of successful clinical decision support systems and how they can be applied to librarian practice
