The fairs are being held outside selected grocery stores in Hispanic communities. Visitors to the NIH booth will find information on a broad variety of conditions and disorders that are a focus of NIH research, including diabetes, cancer, stroke, lupus, hearing loss, glaucoma, depression, heart disease, and drug and alcohol abuse. Materials that promote healthy eating and exercise, and information about participating in clinical trials, will also be available in both Spanish and English, and a Spanish-speaking NIH representative will manage the booth and answer questions.
To promote the fairs and provide communities with health information, a live one-hour radio broadcast will air in Spanish in each city the day before the fair. Spanish-speaking members of the Director’s Council of Public Representatives will participate, along with NIH staff and grantees. Some of the radio broadcasts will be hosted by Dr. Elmer Huerta and will include other NIH guest speakers.
The fairs are part of a larger outreach initiative called ¡Celebra La Vida Con Salud! Next Steps Information about ¡Celebra la Vida Con Salud!, including details about each fair location and radio broadcast, can be found at www.celebralavida.com/html/sobre_la_campana.html. Dr. Huerta’s radio show “Prevenir es Salud” airs weekly from noon to 1:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.
