NCI offers free, confidential information about quitting chewing tobacco and snuff:
- Call 1-877-44U-QUIT (1-877-448-7848). Talk with a smoking cessation counselor about quitting smokeless tobacco - call NCI's Smoking Quitline, within the United States, Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time.
- Use LiveHelp online chat. For smokeless tobacco information, click on the "Smoking Cessation" button in the LiveHelp pop-up - have a confidential online text chat with an NCI smoking cessation counselor, Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time.
Smokeless Tobacco: Key Points
- Snuff is a finely ground or shredded tobacco that is either sniffed through the nose or placed between the cheek and gum. Chewing tobacco is used by putting a wad of tobacco inside the cheek.
- Chewing tobacco and snuff contain 28
cancer-causing agents.
- Smokeless tobacco users have an increased risk of developing cancer of the
oral cavity.
