#974Protocol Development: Relevant Databases, Instruments, and Services Available Through the NIH Library
 
Description:
Protocol development requires a thorough understanding of the relevant research literature; knowledge of sources for instrument selection; and a review of adverse events for the drugs and technologies used in the study. In this class you will learn to use information sources, search techniques, and best practices for greater efficiency and effectiveness.

Examples of databases and tools covered include ProQolid, Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HAPI), MICROMEDEX®, PubMed®, EMBASE™, DIOGENES® Adverse Drug Events Database, and Endnote®/Reference Manager® bibliographic software.
 
Objectives:
To improve the protocol development process by becoming familiar with selected information sources and guidelines. The class will cover:

  • Databases and websites for identifying questionnaires, scales, and instruments used in protocols.
  • The importance of conducting a literature scan of the research topic at the beginning of the study.
  • The need for a comprehensive adverse events search for drugs and technologies utilized in the study.
  • Databases for the literature scan and adverse events search.
  • Tools for organizing citations retrieved.
Who should attend:
NIH staff involved in the preparation and the implementation of a research protocol.
