Breast Cancer and Environment Research Centers (BCERC) Meeting

Fourth Annual Early Environmental Exposures Meeting
November 8-9, 2007
Westin Hotel, Cincinnati, OH

Conference Purpose

The Breast Cancer and Environment Research Centers (BCERC) network is conducting epidemiologic and biologic studies investigating the influence of early environmental exposures on pubertal maturation and mammary gland development and the potential of these developmental changes to alter the risk of breast cancer in later life. This scientific meeting seeks to build on the growing interaction between biologic and epidemiologic lines of research inquiry. The latest scientific findings from the BCERC and other relevant studies will be presented. Community participation and advocacy concerns will continue to be integrated into the program. Content will include the basic biology of breast development; environmental exposures that influence pubertal maturation, breast development and adult breast cancer; and public health communication of the risks associated with these exposures. Environment is defined to include diet, chemical and physical exposures, radiation and psychosocial factors.

Program Organizers

A unique feature of this symposium is the active involvement and integration of advocates and community members in the planning process and implementation of the symposium. Advocates are members of each of the plenary session planning groups as well as the overall planning committee.

Call for Abstracts

The Program Committee for the 4th annual Early Environmental Exposures symposium invites submissions for poster presentations. This scientific meeting seeks to build on the growing interaction between biologic and epidemiologic lines of research inquiry. Presentations will include the latest scientific findings from the BCERC along with results from other investigations related to the theme of the BCERCs. Community participation and advocacy concerns will continue to be highly integrated throughout the conference. The audience for this meeting is expected to be BCERC members; scientists in the areas of mammary gland biology, breast cancer, pubertal maturation, diet, environmental epidemiology and health communications as well as community, environmental health and breast cancer advocates.

Poster presentations must fall in one of the following categories:

  • Recent scientific data
  • Transdisciplinary research approaches/findings
  • Community outreach/engagement and/or advocacy strategies/programs
  • Interpreting/communicating research findings to the public
  • Translating/applying research findings to treatment, prevention and/or policy

Poster space is limited and priority for presentation will be based upon relationship to the themes of environmental factors in pubertal development and/or breast cancer and 2) a representative distribution of topic areas. Non-government organizations (NGOs), students and post-docs conducting BCERC-relevant activities and/or research are encouraged to submit abstracts

  • Submission of Abstracts

Abstract Form: Abstracts are limited to 400 words and must include title, authors and institutions. The body of the abstract should generally conform to the following format: Background, Hypothesis/Objectives, Methods/Work Performed, Results and Conclusions. Specify the category to which the poster should be assigned. (See the categories listed above.)

Submission Deadline: Submit all abstracts via email to kaya@cc.ucsf.edu by September 22, 2007. On the subject line, put Abstract followed by last name of corresponding author. Faxed or mailed copies will not be accepted. Authors will be notified of decisions by October 3, 2007.

  • Poster Presentation
Accepted abstracts will be presented in the poster session on the evening of November 8, 2007. Authors must be present with their poster at this session. Posters should be mounted on Thursday, November 8th, no later than 5:00 PM and remain up for viewing until after the morning break on Friday, November 9. Posters should be no larger than 4'x6'.
