2006 Superfund Basic Research Program Annual Meeting: New Technologies to Assess Environmental ExposureMeeting DescriptionThe 2006 Annual Meeting of the Superfund Basic Research Program (http://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/supported/sbrp/) (SBRP) will be held in San Diego on December 11-12. The meeting focuses on New Technologies in Environmental Exposure: Science and Policy. The co-hosts for this year's event are the three University of California Superfund Basic Research Program grantees: UC San Diego (http://superfund.sdsc.edu/) , UC Davis (http://www-sf.ucdavis.edu/) and UC Berkeley (http://superfund.berkeley.edu/) . Goal StatementThe meeting's central goal is to examine new data management approaches and biological technologies being developed to detect and monitor environmental exposure. The first day of the meeting will begin with general sessions featuring new systems for data sharing, integration, scientific modeling and visualization including the integration of web-accessible Geographic Information Systems (http://www.gis.com/) (GIS) inside Portal technology (a case in point being the new NIEHS Portal). The Environmental Protection Agency (http://www.epa.gov/) (EPA) will give an update on the status of environmental monitoring efforts in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Additional scientific sessions will focus on recent advances in Toxicogenomics, Exposure Models and Bioremediation. Most importantly, the scientific sessions will be organized with a strong emphasis in exploiting the talents of postdoctoral and graduate student trainees along with young faculty from the various SBRP programs. The meeting will also include breakout sessions for the Science, Outreach and Research Translation Core, and Administrative components. The closing presentations will be integrated into discussions that emphasize the importance of bridging science and policy, as brought forward under the umbrella of the Research Translation component of the SBRP.
