TRC Semi-Annual Meeting

Steering Committee Meeting

Dec. 7 - 8, 2003
Pelton Auditorium
The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
Seattle, Washington

Sponsorship

This meeting is sponsored by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institute Health (NIH), and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Objective

Six academic research centers comprise the NIEHS Toxicogenomics Research Consortium (TRC). The member centers are Duke University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Oregon Health and Sciences University (OSHU), Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center/University of Washington (FHCRC/UW), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and the NIEHS Microarray Group. Research conducted under the TRC serves to expand the knowledge of biological responses to environmental stress through the application of gene expression technologies to toxicology; to develop standards and practices for cross-platform gene expression data validation and interpretation; and contribute to the development of a robust relational database for gene expression profile signature data.

The TRC hosts two scientific meetings a year. This year the meeting is hosted by the FHCRC/UW and serves to provide a forum to share recent scientific findings and to foster and strengthen research collaborations. The primary objective of this meeting is to highlight the independent research projects being conducted within the TRC. Platform and poster presentations from individual researchers will focus on the application of gene expression technologies to advance science in four research areas: Disease Mechanisms, Susceptibility, Comparative Genomics, and Predictive Toxicology. A series of keynote speakers from outside the consortium will provide global perspectives on the emerging technologies of proteomics and metabolomics, and the integration of these disciplines within toxicogenomics. A panel discussion will follow to foster discussions of future research directions and initiatives needed to advance the field. It is anticipated that the research outcomes discovered by the TRC will substantially contribute to advancing the development of new approaches for the detection and prevention of environmental diseases.

Research Sessions

The main research sessions are:

  • Disease Mechanisms: Presentations in this session will address the application of gene expression profiling technologies to define the mechanistic underpinnings of environmentally related diseases. Specific focus will be on genetic and environmental components of disease, elucidation of disease pathways and networks and development of disease models.

  • Susceptibility: Presentations in this session will address individual and population susceptibilities to exposure and disease as derived from genetic and environmental analysis and integration. Specific foci include the identification of gene targets and factors mediating susceptibility, and gender-, strain- and species susceptibility.

  • Comparative Genomics: Presentations in this session will focus on comparative and integrated responses of organisms to environmental stimuli. Specific focus will be on cross-species comparisons of biological responses to environmental factors at the gene, transcription, and protein level and their integration in model organisms; conserved biological components, pathways and responses to environmental factors; and computational tools to support comparative toxicogenomics.

  • Predictive Toxicology: Presentations in this session will focus on the development and application of gene expression and proteomics technologies in predictive toxicology. Specific focus will be on the development of model systems and research tools and linkage of predictive responses to disease phenotype.

Venue

This is a two-day meeting to be held December 7-8, 2003, at the Pelton Auditorium, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington.
