Cancer Prevention and Control

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U. S., killing more than 553,000 Americans each year.
  • Cancer-related health care and lost productivity in the U.S. cost $189.5 billion in 2003 (National Institutes of Health).

  • Lifestyle factors such as cigarette smoking, lack of physical activity, poor nutrition and obesity contribute to about one-third of United States cancer deaths each year (American Cancer Society).

  • Reducing the number of new cancer cases, as well as illness, disability and death caused by cancer, are stated national health goals (Healthy People 2010).
