Bio of Yang Zhang, PhD

Back to staff.

Dr. Yan Zhang is a MR Physicist in the MRS Core Facility, National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He received his Ph.D. degree in Radio Physics in 2000 from Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan, China and did post-doctoral training in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and then in the Department of Radiology of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia until he joined NIHM.

Research Interests
Dr. Zhangs responsibility at the NIMH is focused on the MR pulse sequence development to measure brain metabolites and neurotransmitters such as glutamate/glutamine, GABA and etc. GABA, the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in brain, and glutathione, an important marker of oxidative stress and aging, are overlapped by other intense metabolites such as creatine. Spectral editing techniques are needed to reveal GABA and glutathione in proton spectra. He also develops carbon-13 in vivo spectroscopy on both human and primate MR systems.
