Biotechnology Core Laboratory - (BCL)

Joseph Shiloach, Ph.D.

The Biotechnology Core Laboratory specializes in the production and purification of biological materials. The Laboratory undertakes a wide array of tasks such as large scale growth of prokaryotes (e.g. E. coli,) and eukaryotes (e.g. yeast, mammalian cells, insect cells, filamentous fungi) and the production and purification of biological compounds, especially proteins. These products, not available from commercial sources, are needed for clinical, biological and structural studies. The Laboratory is capable of handling such tasks by implementing both physiological and technical approaches. The Laboratory possesses two integrated elements: a fully operational multi-purpose pilot production facility, and the ability to conduct research and process development. The current focus of research and development work is on evaluation and improvement of expression strategies, efficient protein recovery techniques, and understanding of the genetics and physiology of the various microorganisms and cells used for recombinant protein production.
