Department of Anesthesia and Surgical Services
Overview

The Department of Anesthesia and Surgical Services at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center is the only anesthesia department in the world dedicated solely to supporting clinical research.  A staff of 60 individuals provides complex perioperative care to patients enrolled in clinical research protocols.

The department has 11 operating rooms with state-of-the-art equipment and a very exciting academic working environment. Our facilities include an intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging suite, two rooms dedicated to laparoscopic surgery and another to robotic surgery. A recently implemented perioperative information system enables the scheduling of procedures online. The department takes an active role in multidisciplinary clinical research projects and collaborations involving patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures requiring anesthesia care and pain management. In addition to clinical activities, DASS provides links to courses, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Conscious Sedation training, to employees of the NIH Clinical Center.
