Open House: The Ethics of Studying Children at Home Ernie Hood Abstract In September 2005, the National Academies released Ethical Considerations for Research on Housing-Related Health Hazards Involving Children at the request of several federal agencies following the controversial court case Grimes v. Kennedy Krieger Institute. This case called into question the ethical underpinnings of conducting research among low-income populations, particularly with regard to obtaining truly informed consent from the parents of children participating in such studies. The report, which has been received warmly by the research community, makes specific recommendations for researchers and their sponsors and gives clear guidelines for avoiding ethical pitfalls in their work.
