Does Secrecy Equal Security? Limiting Access to Environmental Information Richard Dahl Abstract Since the 1966 passage of the Freedom of Information Act, federal officials have been required to have very good reasons for keeping data secret. Following the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, however, online access to potentially sensitive government information has been sharply limited in an attempt to keep the information from being used to launch further attacks. Experts disagree as to whether limiting such information is protective of society, or whether it causes more problems than it solves.
