NIDCD NATIONAL RESEARCH SERVICE AWARDS FOR INDIVIDUAL FELLOWS

National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders

This Notice applies to applicants for individual National Research 
Service Awards (NRSAs) submitting fellowship applications within the 
scientific purview of the National Institute on Deafness and Other 
Communication Disorders (NIDCD) for the following programs: NRSAs for 
Individual Predoctoral Fellows [(F31) (PA-00-125)] 
(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-125.html); NRSAs for 
Individual Postdoctoral Fellows [(F32) (PA-00-104)] 
(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-104.html); and NIH 
NRSAs for Senior Fellows [(F33) (PA-00-131)] 
(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-131.html). 

The NIDCD requests that applicants for these fellowship awards send, at 
the time of submission (original application and one copy) to the 
Center for Scientific Review, one additional copy of the completed and 
signed application and all appendix materials, if the latter is 
included with the application, to:

The NIDCD now conducts the initial peer review of applications for 
these fellowship programs within its Scientific Review Branch based on 
an expedited schedule of four months from submission to award.  In 
order to maintain this schedule, it is imperative that the applicant 
meet the NRSA submission deadlines of April 5, August 5 and December 5, 
and concurrently send the additional copy to the NIDCD official noted 
above.  Late applications will be returned.  Predoctoral students 
applying for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships for Minority Students 
(F31) (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-069.html) and 
Individual Predoctoral Fellowships for Students with Disabilities (F31) 
(http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-068.html) within the 
NIDCD scientific purview should not send copies to the NIDCD, since 
these applications are reviewed within the NIH Center for Scientific 
Review.

It is important to note that NIDCD’s F31 Program, PA-00-125, is aimed 
solely at doctoral candidates engaged in the conduct of dissertation 
research.  Doctoral students within three months of completing their 
qualifying examinations whose dissertation projects are fully 
formulated, but not yet formally approved by their dissertation 
committee, may submit an F31 application.  However, NIDCD will not 
activate the award of an applicant whose application was favorably 
reviewed until the dissertation project has been formally approved by 
the dissertation committee and the student has been officially 
designated as a doctoral candidate.  In order to activate an F31 award, 
an applicant receiving notification from the NIDCD of a favorable award 
decision should arrange for their institution to submit a letter to the 
NIDCD Grants Management Branch verifying that she/he is a doctoral 
candidate engaged in full-time dissertation research.

NRSA applicants are also reminded that the NIH strictly enforces grant 
application format guidelines (font size, page limit, margin), as 
announced in the NIH Guide

In addition to required formats, applicants 
should be careful to include all required components when preparing 
applications.  Noncompliant applications will be returned.

Applicants for NIDCD fellowship support and their mentors are strongly 
encouraged to consult with the following program official prior to 
submitting an individual NRSA application:
