to provide you with a weekly update of highlights about what has happened
in the world of HIV/AIDS treatment, prevention, and research. We hope you
find this encapsulated view of HIV/AIDS news useful.
World AIDS Day—December 1,
2005
This
year the theme for World AIDS Day is "Stop AIDS. Keep the
Promise." What does this mean? "Keep the Promise" is an
appeal to governments and policy makers to meet the targets they agreed to
in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Some
of those targets include:
- Reducing
HIV prevalence by 25% among men
and women aged 15–24 in the most affected countries.
- Ensuring
that at least 90% of young
people aged 15–24 have access to the information, education, and
services necessary to develop the life skills required to reduce their
vulnerability to HIV infection.
- Reducing
the proportion of infants infected with HIV by 20% by
increasing access to services that prevent mother-to-child transmission.
- Increasing
annual spending on HIV and AIDS to $7–10 billion
in low- and middle-income countries and those countries experiencing or
at risk of experiencing rapid expansion of
HIV.
Show your support for World AIDS Day
2005 by:
- Raising
awareness of HIV and AIDS in your area.
- Wearing
a red ribbon and asking others to do the same.
- Protecting
yourself and your partners—this is the first and best way to stop
the spread of HIV.
- Getting
tested.
AIDSinfo
will celebrate its third anniversary as an international HIV/AIDS
information resource on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2005. On that day we
plan to release newly designed Web pages featuring enhanced navigation and
functionality.
