Survey Uncovers Surprising Attitudes Toward HIV Vaccine Research
It may surprise you to find out that a survey of U.S.
adults, conducted by the HIV Vaccine Communications Campaign of the
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, revealed that many
people believe an HIV vaccine exists but that it is being kept a secret.
Or that more than half of African Americans, men who have sex with men,
and Hispanics surveyed either don’t know or incorrectly believe that
experimental HIV vaccines can cause HIV infection. And that while most
everyone surveyed thinks it’s imperative for researchers to develop a HIV
vaccine, they are reluctant to support family members or friends in
participating in a vaccine trial to help further that cause. To get a
better idea of these and other unexpected attitudes and beliefs about HIV
vaccine research, go to: http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/news/newsreleases/2005/hivsurvey.htm
