Second International HIV Vaccine Trial Discontinued
On October 23, 2007, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) issued a press release stating that as a result of findings from the STEP HIV vaccine study, the South African Phambili study, which tested the same candidate vaccine, has also been discontinued.
An independent Data Safety Monitoring Board for the Phambili study concluded that the vaccine being tested could not be shown to prevent HIV infection or affect the course of the disease in people subsequently infected with HIV. Immunizations and enrollment have been permanently suspended for this study, although follow-up visits will still occur.

CDC Announces Broadcast on Current Events in HIV Prevention among Hispanics
On November 15, 2007, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Public Health Training Network will host a 2-hour satellite broadcast and Webcast, "Current Challenges and Successes in HIV Prevention with Hispanics/Latinos." The program will focus on:
- Raising awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on Hispanics in the United States and Puerto Rico
- Promoting a better understanding of the issues that influence HIV/AIDS risk among Hispanics
- Encouraging organizations who work with Hispanics to implement effective interventions to reduce HIV transmission
