Exposure to high concentrations of organic solvents can cause narcosis and anesthesia. Depression of the central nervous system is also associated with heavy exposure to asphyxiants, fumigants, and insecticides. Other agents that can cause acute encephalopathy include: organic metal compounds (lead, mercury, tin, nickel, and manganese); hydrazines, and other organic compounds (2-aminopyridine, beta-chloroprene, biphenyl, cyclonite, nitromethane, methyl iodide, pyridine, etc. See the acute syndromes for Fumigants, Solvents, Asphyxiants, Organophosphates & carbamates, and Organochlorine insecticides. |
